TRANSFORMING DALLAS COLLEGE FOR THE FUTURE.
Bringing my experience in preK-12 education as a Dallas ISD Trustee to Dallas College
I am running to use my 16 years of experience overseeing preK-12 education in Dallas ISD to the Board of Trustees of Dallas College. I see my contributions in 3 key areas: deep education experience, innovation, and accountability. Running for the Dallas College board of trustees is a logical extension of my significant experience and expertise in education from early childhood to 12th grade, and beyond. My personal story exemplifies what is possible with an education, including both my scientific and legal backgrounds.
Experience
Dallas College needs innovative leadership that is both transformational and student-focused. As a Dallas ISD trustee for 16 years, I have served on a policy board that has aligned education work from early childhood to early college high schools, and now the Career Institutes. In addition, during my tenure I have overseen over 5 billion in bond construction, drafted the key policies that help oversee and support 20,000+ employees, and have worked hard to make sure that faculty and staff are compensated accordingly.
In addition, I have been both an adjunct professor (Advanced Physiology, Brookhaven) and a student at Richland College (Beginner Chinese I and II) and understand the challenges that our faculty and students face.
Innovation
My career as a biotechnology patent attorney revolves around innovation every single day. I have been a leader in, and drove the alignment of, the educational pathways between Dallas ISD and Dallas College under both our early college high school (P-TECH) and Career Institutes. I advocated for the rapid expansion of early college high schools at all Dallas ISD schools to make sure that students in every quadrant of the district were able to maximize education attainment. I have also helped drive the expansion of school choice within the school district, especially neighborhood schools, to provide multiple career pathways that align to the jobs of the future. I was also the designer and driving force behind Dallas ISD’s Career Institutes, which are designed to bring careers that do not require 4-year college to the forefront, with direct connections through Dallas College to the workforce.
Accountability
Financial accountability is also an area in which I have vast experience as both business chair and audit chair for multiple years in Dallas ISD. Given the ongoing bond work in Dallas College it is important to have the business experience and oversight experience to make sure that the taxpayer’s money is paramount. Finally, a deep understanding of leveraging philanthropic dollars with public funds will be a way to address significant challenges for Dallas College students. Again, my experience with the restart of the Dallas Education Foundation in Dallas ISD provides experience in this critical new area.
Dr. Edwin Flores has the experienced leadership we need.
During his tenure as a school trustee, I authored a number of key policies, including the district transparency policy, sustainability policy, the core beliefs and commitments, delayering central administration, and completely revamped the intake process at HR. I also led the charge on the financial plan that has now yielded a robust fund balance.
EDWIN FLORES - DALLAS COLLEGE TRUSTEE, DISTRICT 1
I am pleased to be running for Dallas College trustee for District 1 to bring my 16 yearas of experience as a Dallas ISD school board member to the Dallas College Board. As a strong supporter of our public schools, I will continue to provide strong experienced leadership, strict accountability, fiscal discipline, and governing by policy.
We must also have a clear vision for the changes needed to design the schools of the future. I have the leadership skills and the experience from my leadership in Dallas ISD to help guide the changes that we need to transform our community college for the future.
